Who Qualifies for Memory Care?
Memory care becomes the right level when dementia begins to outpace what a home caregiver or standard assisted living can safely manage.
Common signs include:
- ✓Wandering or exit-seeking: Leaving the house, getting lost on familiar routes, or trying to “go home” from home
- ✓Unsafe behavior: Leaving the stove on, mismanaging medications, falling repeatedly
- ✓Sundowning: Agitation, confusion, or restlessness that builds in the late afternoon and evening
- ✓Aggression, paranoia, or hallucinations that a family caregiver cannot redirect
- ✓Loss of judgment about hygiene, eating, or strangers at the door
- ✓Caregiver burnout: The spouse or adult child is exhausted, sleep-deprived, or no longer safe providing care
A diagnosis alone does not require memory care. Many people in early-stage dementia do well in assisted living or a board and care home. The trigger is usually safety: when supervision needs to be continuous and the environment needs to be secured.

Who Pays for Memory Care?
Memory care generally costs more than assisted living because of the staffing and security involved. In the Los Angeles area, expect roughly $5,000 to $7,000 a month in a secured board and care home and $6,000 to $9,000 or more in a dedicated memory care community, depending on room type and care level. Funding sources include:
Private funds
Savings, pensions, Social Security, family contributions, or proceeds from a home sale
Long Term care insurance
Dementia is one of the most common benefit triggers; most policies cover licensed RCFE care
VA Aid and Attendance
A monthly pension benefit for qualifying wartime veterans and surviving spouses
Medi-Cal Assisted Living Waiver (ALW)
Available in 15 counties including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino. It covers care services at participating facilities but not room and board, and waiting lists are long.
Medicare does not pay for memory care room and board. It does cover physician visits, some therapies, and hospice care delivered in the community.
